SuperShifts: A Field Guide for the Age of Intelligence

When I first started writing what would become SuperShifts, I was not trying to predict the future. Futurists don't do that. I was trying to make sense of the world I was already living in. A world where every assumption I had grown up with about stability, identity, work, and leadership was coming apart faster than most of us knew how to process. A world where technology was accelerating beyond our cultural ability to absorb it, where institutions were wobbling, where new possibilities flickered just out of reach while old models crumbled in our hands.

It was not a project born out of certainty. It was born out of necessity. Out of a quiet but growing recognition that we needed a new lens, a new way to see the deeper forces reshaping our lives, before those forces swept us along without our conscious participation.

Today, SuperShifts: Navigating the Age of Intelligence officially launches into the world. While I am proud of the book, I am even more grateful for what it represents. This is not just a milestone for me personally. It is a marker for all of us standing at the edge of a new age and era, trying to find our way forward with open eyes and open hands.

This week’s issue of Future Proof is not just a celebration. It is a conversation. A reflection on where we are, what we are facing together, and why understanding the shifts beneath our feet is essential if we are to build futures that do not simply survive the turbulence but transform because of it.

A World Redrawn in Real Time

If the last decade has taught us anything, it is that the world we inhabit can redraw itself faster than our old narratives can keep up. We are no longer living in an era where change happens gradually, giving us time to adjust and adapt at a comfortable pace. We are living in a time of accelerated convergence, where multiple systems: technological, ecological, social, and economic, are colliding and mutating simultaneously.

The future no longer arrives one disruption at a time. It arrives in overlapping waves, folding and unfolding across every layer of our lives. AI reshapes work at the same time that climate events reshape cities. New governance models emerge just as traditional political systems fray. New currencies rise while old financial models falter. Identity itself becomes fluid, just as the structures that once defined belonging fracture and dissolve.

In the middle of all this, it is tempting to cling harder to the illusion of control, to double down on the familiar even as it recedes, to wait for things to “stabilize” before taking bold steps forward. I know that impulse well because I have felt it, too. The human mind was not wired for this level of volatility, and the instinct to freeze or to fight for what we once knew is not a failure. It is biology.

But the truth is, there is no going back to stability as we once understood it. Stability is no longer the absence of change. Stability, if it exists at all, must now come from our capacity to adapt within change—from our ability to see patterns earlier, move with more coherence, and ground ourselves in clarity even when the terrain shifts underfoot.

That is why SuperShifts exists—not as a roadmap to avoid disruption but as a field guide to recognizing the currents already shaping our shared future.

Why SuperShifts Matter Now

A SuperShift is not just a big trend. It is not simply a disruption in one sector or a temporary technological leap. A SuperShift is a fundamental convergence—a moment where multiple forces, long in the making, reach critical mass and tip us into a new paradigm. It is the point where the rules of the game change, often without warning.

We are living through at least nine of these right now, from the merging of biological and artificial intelligence to the deep reconfiguration of energy systems, from the erosion of social contracts to the transformation of global power flows. Some are technological. Some are ecological. Some are deeply human and emotional.

Each of these shifts would be significant on its own, but together, they are remaking the world in real time.

And here is the deeper truth: most people do not see them coming until they are already inside of them. It is human nature to mistake the early signals of transformation for noise. To downplay small shifts until they cascade into something undeniable. To assume that the old structures will bend but not break.

But once you know what to look for, the SuperShifts become visible. You start to see the connections between changes that once seemed isolated. You begin to recognize the deeper patterns moving beneath the surface of current events. You understand that these are not isolated crises or random disruptions. They are part of a larger reordering.

Seeing them clearly does not make the uncertainty vanish. But it does give you a foothold. It gives you language. It gives you agency.

And right now, agency may be the most precious resource we have.

Navigating, Not Controlling

One of the hardest lessons I have had to learn—and continue to relearn—is that the future is not something we control. It is something we navigate.

Control belongs to the mindset of the last age—the age of machines, the age of industrial stability, and linear projections. It served us well in a different context, b-ut it cannot prepare us for what is emerging now.

In the Age of Intelligence, navigation becomes the primary skill. It is the ability to sense early shifts, to reframe assumptions, to design systems that evolve rather than calcify. It is the ability to move with uncertainty without losing yourself. It is the humility to recognize when the map no longer matches the territory, and the courage to keep moving anyway.

This is the heart of future proofing. It is not about predicting every twist and turn. It is about building the internal and external systems that allow you to stay flexible, creative, and purposeful as the landscape around you evolves.

SuperShifts is not a book of predictions. It is a set of lenses. A way to train your perception so that you can move through this era with more intentionality and less fear. A way to reclaim agency in a time that too often feels like it is slipping away.

Building the Future on Solid Ground

What makes this moment both daunting and exhilarating is that we are not simply passive witnesses to these shifts. We are active participants in how they unfold.

Every choice we make right now matters. Every organization we build, every community we nurture, every technology we develop, every policy we advocate for, every story we tell about who we are and where we are going. These are not small acts. They are shaping the scaffolding of the world to come.

Understanding the SuperShifts is not about retreating into analysis paralysis. It is about moving into action from a place of greater wisdom. It is about knowing which forces are inevitable and which ones are still malleable. It is about designing for resilience and regeneration, not just for survival.

It is about recognizing that the Age of Intelligence will not simply be about machines thinking faster. It will be about humans learning to think differently—more systemically, more adaptively, more ethically, and more imaginatively.

That is the ground we must build on—not the false security of outdated plans or the brittle stability of rigid structures, but the living, breathing resilience of people, organizations, and societies that know how to grow through change, not just endure it.

An Invitation to Begin

Today marks the launch of SuperShifts, but it is only one step in a much longer journey. A journey we are already on together.

Future Proof has always been about more than ideas. It is about building a community of people who are willing to face the realities of change with open eyes and open hearts. Who are willing to let go of illusions, to wrestle with complexity, to support each other as we navigate a world that refuses to stand still.

SuperShifts is a companion for that journey. It is a field guide, not a final word, a toolset, not a guarantee, but a way of seeing the future more clearly so we can meet it more fully.

I am grateful to be walking this path with you, humbled by the trust you place in these conversations, and more committed than ever to helping us all not just endure this age of transformation but shape it into something worthy of the best of who we are.

We are not here to cling to the past. We are here to build what comes next.

The future is not waiting.

It is being written right now, in the choices we make and the courage we cultivate.

Let’s move forward together.

Most planning tools ask you to predict what will happen. This one asks you to decide, in advance, what you will do when something specific happens, so the decision is already made on the day you would otherwise be too rattled to make it. It is the simplest version of a discipline that serious foresight teams run on a wall, and it...

Anxiety is Not Foresight, Future Proof Issue 54

NEWSLETTER EXCLUSIVE · FROM THE FUTURIST TOOLKIT The Trigger Board, Pocket Version This week's essay argues that anxiety loops while foresight completes. This is the tool that does the completing, and it only appears here, never on Substack or LinkedIn. Four moves, one recurring worry, ten minutes. 1. Name it. Everyone Gets a Superpower

Week in Review · Issue 53 Hi Reader, Funny thing about writing this week's issue. Halfway through an essay arguing that everyone now has a superpower they barely use, I caught myself doing a research task the slow way out of pure habit, the exact behavior the essay diagnoses. I stopped, ran my own robot question, and got the afternoon back. Physician, heal thyself. So this week I built you the version I wish I had been running all along, below, and it is only in this email. Steve For Email...
